About This Course

Ready to take your wheel throwing to the next level? Our 5-week intermediate pottery course is designed for potters who have mastered the basics and are ready to refine their technique, develop their throwing skills, and create more considered, beautifully finished pieces.

Working in a relaxed and supportive studio environment, you’ll build on your existing skills, experiment with new forms, and gain greater confidence and control at the wheel. With guidance along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to challenge yourself, explore your own style, and take your pottery further.

Week 1 – Refining Your Technique
Build on your existing centring and throwing skills, focusing on consistency, improved control, and creating more even walls. We’ll explore techniques to help you throw with greater confidence and precision.

Week 2 – Form & Proportion
Experiment with shaping and proportions to create more refined forms. Develop your ability to throw a range of shapes, from taller cylinders and wider bowls to more challenging forms that push your skills further.

Week 3 – Exploring New Forms
Expand your throwing repertoire and experiment with different shapes, sizes, and profiles. Focus on improving your control, developing your own style, and creating pieces that are both functional and visually appealing.

Week 4 – Trimming & Refinement
Take your work to the next level with more considered trimming and finishing techniques. Learn how to create balanced foot rings, refine profiles, and achieve a clean, professional finish that complements each piece.

Week 5 – Glazing & Finishing Touches

Explore glaze choices and application techniques to enhance your finished work. Consider how colour, texture, and glaze combinations can complement your forms and bring your creative ideas to life.

By the end of the course, you’ll have developed greater confidence at the wheel, refined your throwing and finishing techniques, and created a collection of individual pieces that reflect your growing skills and personal style.

What to Bring

We provide everything you need for your pottery experience — just bring an old towel and a willingness to get your hands dirty!

Our studio is equipped with pottery wheels, quality clay, and the tools you’ll need for throwing, trimming, and refining your work. A selection of glazes is also available to help you explore different colours and finishes.

Firing is included, with your work carefully dried, glazed, and kiln-fired to a durable, food-safe finish. Aprons are available, but we recommend wearing comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a little messy.

This course is an opportunity to build on what you already know, experiment with new techniques, and enjoy dedicated time at the wheel in a friendly, creative studio environment.
